Room for the toes
The toe box should be wide and deep enough to avoid pushing the big toe inward or rubbing the prominence. Toes should rest without compression.
Check fit while standing and preferably later in the day, when the foot may be slightly larger.
Upper and sole
Soft material over the sensitive area reduces local pressure. A stable sole that is not completely rigid may make rollover easier.
High heels increase forefoot loading. A low stable heel and secure heel fit are usually more comfortable.
Wearing a brace in shoes
Allow for the thickness of the brace and check the skin after a short trial. A larger size does not solve a narrow shoe shape.
Blisters, numbness or increasing pain mean the combination needs to change.
